SCIA Engineer is a powerful solution for structural analysis and design—and when combined with SDS2, it forms a complete workflow from engineering to fabrication-ready steel detailing.
SDS2 is an all-in-one steel detailing software used by fabricators and engineers worldwide to automate connection design, produce accurate shop drawings, and ensure constructible steel models. What sets SDS2 apart is its ability to intelligently design steel connections based on actual geometry and design forces, not just assumptions.
The interoperability between SCIA and SDS2 is based on the open SAF (Structural Analysis Format), making data exchange transparent and reliable. Engineers can begin by analyzing steel structures in SCIA—complete with loading, bracing, and second-order effects—then export their model to SDS2. There, connections are automatically created based on Eurocode rules and fabrication preferences, with minimal manual input required.

ers, optimized profiles, or refined connections—can be exported back into SCIA for further structural verification or design iteration. This roundtrip exchange reduces rework, improves accuracy, and ensures engineers and detailers stay fully aligned throughout the project.

Mapping of profiles and materials is handled directly during the import process. A visual comparison report in SDS2 highlights which members have changed or stayed the same, giving you full control over updates. And once detailing is complete, SDS2 can automatically produce shop drawings, gather sheets, and submittal packages—complete with dynamic PDFs and clickable references.

The SCIA–SDS2 workflow currently supports:
- Transfer of steel members and bracing
- Import/export of internal forces
- Eurocode-compliant connection design
- Material and profile mapping
- Drawing generation (detail sheets, gather sheets, submittals)
- Visual error tracking and connection validation
- Optional exports to CNC, IFC, or BIM collaboration platforms
Together, SCIA and SDS2 create a seamless workflow from structural design to detailed fabrication, helping engineering and detailing teams deliver high-quality steel projects faster—with fewer errors and greater confidence.
