In the 21th century, the paradigm shifts from sleek to organic structures
One hundred years ago, the architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Berlage and Rietveld became famous with building projects based on simple shapes, light materials and colorful patterns. The New Style or New Pragmatism had its followers during the whole 20th century. In the 21th century, star architects follow a different vision where morphology and organic shapes are predominant. Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Daniël Liebeskind or Coop Himmelb(l)au - to name a few – have built extraordinary structures; many of them have been structurally designed with the help of Scia Engineer, e.g. the Musée des Confluences (Lyon, France), Fondation Luis Vuitton (Paris, France), New Port House (Antwerp, Belgium), …
Also in bridge design and civil structures natural organic shapes gain importance for their optimum use of material and aesthetics; Ney & Partners is a structural consultancy established in Brussels designing atypical bridges (see the Footbridge in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg).
An increasing number of structures are also being built with shapes directly influenced by nature (flowers, insects …) as a response to the ecological transition. A notable architect in this field is the Belgian Vincent Callebaut, who conceived the Tao Zhu Garden, Agora Residential Tower (Taipei) currently under construction.
